A few farmers are switching to marijuana and upping their poultry techniques. With the demand for clean meat at an all-time high, these farmers are dosing their chicken feed with marijuana as an alternative to giving them antibiotics. While this is socially controversial and still a relatively under-the-radar practice, one farmer suggests it’s more “humane” than using antibiotics.

Farmers are Using Marijuana

If you thought marijuana was only good for getting high, think again. Some farmers are using the plant to fatten up their chickens and selling them for higher prices to consumers. Researchers say feeding chickens with marijuana instead of antibiotics is fetching higher prices from consumers seeking organic poultry. So if you’re looking for a chicken dinner that’s sure to get you lifted, be sure to ask your local grocer if they carry any weed-fed poultry!

Controversial, Using Marijuana for Feed

The findings of this new study are undoubtedly controversial, and there are pros and cons to feeding chickens marijuana instead of antibiotics. Some argue that this is a more humane way to raise chickens, as it eliminates the need for harsh drugs that can have adverse side effects. However, others contend that this could be a dangerous practice, as marijuana is still illegal in many parts of the world. It will be interesting to see how this debate develops in the coming months.

Marijuana Use among Chickens Leads to Weight Gain

According to a recent study, chickens fed marijuana instead of antibiotics fetch higher prices from consumers seeking organic poultry. The study found that marijuana use among chickens leads to weight gain and produces meat with higher fat content. While some may view this as a negative, the increased demand for organic poultry products has created an opportunity for farmers to capitalize on this trend. With more and more consumers looking for ways to reduce their exposure to antibiotics, it seems likely that this trend will continue in the future.

Marijuana vs. Antibiotics

Favorite media outlets (such as the BBC and Forbes) are looking to run reports on how to avoid antibiotics in food. We’re not here to jump to conclusions; this is just a collection of some of our thoughts on the subject.

The Importance of Ordering in Smaller Portions

Firstly, as a part of what we have mentioned above, you should always try to order your food in smaller portions.” The European Food Safety Authority estimates the average annual consumption of antibiotics in the European Union is 40.3 kilograms (89.5 pounds) per 1,000 people — far more than the U.S. (26.8 kilograms, or 58 pounds), Canada (17.8 kilograms), and China (11.4 kilograms). It will be great for the environment and animal welfare. It will also be suitable for food suppliers’ bottom lines.

Concerns about our food supply are rising, as are consumer demands. Some of the world’s largest food companies are responding to consumer concerns. In 2015, Nestle, the largest food company in the world, announced a move away from Ractopamine. Shortly after, Tyson Foods, the largest meat producer in the U.S., announced that it would move away from using medically necessary antibiotics for livestock within five years.

The United States Government Regulates Marijuana in Poultry Farming

The United States government regulates the use of marijuana in poultry farming. However, researchers say that some farmers are using it to raise chickens with healthier meat fetching higher prices from consumers seeking organic poultry. Marijuana has long been known to have therapeutic properties, and more recently, its compounds have been shown to promote animal health. CBD oil, for example, has been shown to boost immunity and reduce inflammation in chickens. Combined with other natural ingredients like garlic and turmeric powder, it can help keep chickens healthy without using antibiotics.

Farmers Who Choose to Use Marijuana

Must obtain a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). A new study has found that feeding chickens marijuana instead of antibiotics is fetching higher prices from consumers seeking organic poultry. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Georgia, found that farmers who choose to use marijuana must obtain a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The findings suggest that there is a growing market for organic poultry products and that farmers who can utilize alternative production methods may be able to capitalize on this trend.

  1. I was really impressed and amazed that this is an actual practice among farmers. I didn’t know they could do that, as this was the first time I read that chickens could be fed with marijuana. I am not an expert and don’t know what implications this could have, so I will try to find out more after reading your article. But indeed an impressive fact if true.

    1. Hello, marijuana is the resource we need to replenish our farmland and feed the hungry.

Come back and see us again,

      Kevin

  2. It is a bizarre topic and the first I have heard of it. I think there needs to be more research done before implementing such a thing on a big scale.

In one way, it is good because they will be feeding the chickens less food, meaning there will be more food for other chickens, and nowadays, with global warming, it is vital that we use food sparingly, not just for us but for animals also.

What is your take on this article? Would you recommend this being implemented on a big scale?

    1. Hello Enrico, You are on the right track. It is still a considerable debate. My take on the new resource is that it has too many benefits not to do it. Marijuana is one of the best answers to a renewable resource without hurting the environment or ourselves.

      Thanks for sharing your opinion,

      Kevin
